Perfect Christmas Destination

Christmas is a magical time, wherever you choose to spend it. The joy of getting the family together, eating food that you’ve been looking forward to all year, and exchanging gifts with loved ones is something that cannot be beaten.

However, if you are looking to head off for a festive break over Christmas time and are looking for something a little bit different, then you can’t go far wrong with the Lake District. This UNESCO world heritage site attracts visitors all year round, but in the colder months, it has so much festive cheer to offer.

If you need convincing, here are our top three reasons why the Lake District is the perfect Christmas destination!

The Landscape:

While a white Christmas is something most of the UK tends to miss out on, in the Lake District your chances are a little higher.

With plenty of mountains, lots of the surrounding high ground manages to pick up a dusting of the white stuff every year and it may even make its way down to some of the towns if you’re lucky.

If you want to experience it for yourself, you can wrap up warm and go for a hike up one of the fells. There are plenty of walks for all abilities, and the National Trust have listed some of the best ones here. However, do make sure you are prepared and choose walks suitable for your experience level.

The Accommodation:

The Lake District is also home to some fantastic accommodation options, which are perfect for the festive season. Get warm and cosy after a day of hiking or taking in the lakeside views, and relax in one of the area’s best hotels.

One of our favourites is the Broadoaks Country House Hotel, which is perfectly situated close to Windermere, not too far from the beaten track but still secluded and peaceful.

The hotel is a luxurious place to stay, constructed from Lake District stone and slate, with landscaped gardens, views of Windermere, period furniture and a welcoming open fire in the lounge.

The Festive Events:

From Christmas markets and craft fairs to pantomimes and carolling, there’s a great deal going on in the Lake District over the festive period.

Whether you’d like to enjoy a spot of Christmas shopping and find something special to bring back home with you, or even try some wonderful Christmas menus from some of the Lake District’s finest eateries, there’s something for everybody, and you can find all of the details of what’s on here.

We hope this has given you a little bit of an idea of why the Lake District is such a great place to visit during the Christmas period and perhaps inspired you to book a festive break for you and your family.

And the fun doesn’t stop once Christmas is over either; if you’d like to stay a while longer you’ll find that there is plenty to enjoy over the New Year period too!
