Early Life of Salva Dut
Salva Dut was born on December 1, 1974, in a small community belonging to the Dinka Tribe in Southwest Sudan. He has three brothers and two sisters. During the civil war in his nation, his family separated from him.
Sadly, only one of his brothers lived to see the end of the war. The conflict reached his village in 1985 and quickly spread to northern and southern Sudan. It was during this time that Salva separated his family.
When he was eleven, he was among the 17 million children who embarked on a perilous journey from Ethiopia to Kenya in search of refuge during the war. This group of young boys is known as “The Lost Boys of Sudan.”
Dut and the Lost Boys of Sudan journeyed for five years in harsh conditions, facing continuous military and animal attacks. Most of the boys died from illnesses, thirst, and malnutrition. Finally, they reached Kenya to seek refuge.
He lived in the Kakuma Refugee Camp, controlled by the United Nations, for six years before resettling in the US in 1996.
Salva Dut was one of the 3,800 Lost Boys of Sudan who traveled to the US, Canada, and Australia, where they were welcomed by families.
